District Service Project

The Carolinas’ District Service Project helps the Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina, an organization that provides residential and foster care/adoption services for children that are unable to live at home due to unhealthy living situations, such as violence and neglect. Once a semester, Circle K clubs from all over North and South Carolina come together for our District Large Scale Service Project (DLSSP), a weekend-long project that takes place at the Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina. We help the Homes with various projects around their campus that they need to have done, but do not have the time or resources to properly address.

We have been attending the Boys and Girls Homes for our DLSSP since the fall of 2006. The projects we have worked on have greatly varied over the years. Here are the past DLSSPs that have had a great impact on the Homes:
  1. In Fall 2006, Circle K’ers painted the exterior of the Homes’ Country Store. At the store, donations that the children cannot use are sold and the money raised goes towards supporting the programs run by the Homes.
  2. In Spring 2007, Circle K’ers cleaned out a large storage space to be used for a foster care adoption office, scanned pictures to be used in promotion materials and did a little bit of yard work around the campus.
  3. In Fall 2007, Circle K’ers renovated the “Teaching Parent’s” part of the Kiwanis Cottage by ripping up old carpet and painting the walls.·
  4. In Spring 2008, Circle K’ers painted the family room and some of the children’s rooms at the Kiwanis Cottage, raked leaves around the cottage and picked up sticks at the Homes’ horse farm so they could bail hay.
  5. In Fall 2008, Circle K’ers helped beautify the Homes’ campus through activities such as raking, weeding, trimming, and even power washing three cottages. Cirlce K’ers also painted a barn and fence at the Homes’ horse farm and crocheted squares for Warm Up America.
  6. In Spring 2009, Circle K’ers painted fences, a shed, and some mailboxes. They also cleaned out and moved furniture in several cottages with major kitchen cleanings. There was also a birthday celebration for the residents followed by a step show by the residents and sports time with everyone. The Spring DLSSP also featured a competitive donation drive that was very successful!

Throughout the year, other activities are also done to help the Homes, outside of DLSSP. For example, at the District Convention the District Board members and Club Presidents are auctioned off to get pied in the face; all money raised is donated to the Homes. For the 2008-2009 school year, DLSSP t-shirts were created, with all proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Homes. Also new in the 2008-2009 school year, there was a Donation Competition Drive for the Homes. Clubs were encouraged to collect donations, raise money, and spread advocacy about the Homes on their own as well.
